MechaChess is a project I started with the goal of solving the problem of the fantasy chess set. Rather than simply matching the pieces to their closest counterpart in a series of existing or random designs; I created each robot to match the role and iconography of the corresponding piece, meaning that not only is each piece distinct and easy to recognize, but the design helps players to recognize the pieces' unique role, with different capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. The robots, or mecha, are specially developed to serve these roles: The King holds the pilot and must be defended; the Rook is the base defense turret; the Knight the tactical close air support; the Pawn the frontlines soldier. The Queen's power is maximal, only possible because of her transcendent AI , while the Bishop is her Apostle, watching over a long sector of fire, and swiftly taking out opponents that stand in her way.
